In the Toronto Catholic District School Board (T.C.D.S.B.), Parent Councils are called "Catholic Student Parent Council" or "C.S.P.C.". Every school in Ontario is required through provincial legislation to have a volunteer Parent Council for the purpose of providing a forum for parents to actively participate in improving student achievement and "to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents" [s.2 of Education Act Regulation 612/00). In other words, it is a place where parents can discuss what is going on in the school, provide suggestions for improvement and find ways on how they can contribute. So, if you have ideas on how to improve school life and student achievement or you just want to help out by volunteering at a social event or fundraiser (e.g. Fun Fair, Welcome BBQ, Potluck, etc.), C.S.P.C. is the place to be!

What is C.S.P.C. (Parent Council) all about?
C.S.P.C. is a parent volunteer group who act as a forum for parents to have a voice in their children’s education. Our main purpose is “to improve student achievement and enhance accountability of the education system to parents.” How do we do this? At the beginning of the year we set a list of goals that we want to achieve. They usually fall into the below sub-categories: 1) School Social Activities (for school spirit building): Assist in organizing and funding various events that help bring the St. Cecilia community together to share friendship and fun. School can't be all about work without some play! Examples of spirit building events include: Fun Fair, Movie Night Welcome BBQ, etc. 2) Academics: Providing assistance and/or funds for teachers and students with special academic projects such as Scientist in the Classroom and the RCM Art Program. As well, C.S.P.C. reviews and advises on the School Learning Plan and any other school board policies effecting academic achievement at the school. 3) Co-Curricular (Sports, Clubs, Art and Music): Encouraging, supporting and assisting various co-curricular activities. For example, raising money for sport's uniforms, trophies, and music repairs & new equipment. 4) Special School Improvement Project: Each year we pick one major project to focus on for school life improvement. For the past few years, we have been focusing on the greening and renewal of the school yard (more trees & plants, benches, playground improvements, etc.). 5) Parent Involvement and Family Resources Providing resources for parents, particularly through this website, to assist them in nurturing the academic, spiritual and social aspects of not only their child's life but the family unit as a whole. We have weblinks for physical and mental health, catholic spiritual resources, homework help websites, settlement information for new Canadians, helpful government and parenting forum website links, etc. and many more. FUNDRAISING & GRANT WRITING Many of the activities above require money, so fundraising is a component of C.S.P.C. In the past, our two major fundraisers have been Pizza Day and the Spring Fun Fair.
